Each year, Mito Paz seeks grants and raises money to make Camp Basil Jones happen. It is a 4 week summer camp where kids from around Belize come to learn about our ocean, our reef and how important it is to us in Belize and to the world. They have presentations, make crafts, play games and sports, snorkel, swim, hike…all on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach – 14 miles north on Ambergris Caye.
Some are seeing the ocean for the first time.
This year, three week long visits were planned, all with about 30 children. The first week’s kids are from Belize City, week two and three from Orange Walk and Benque – both areas farther from the sea.
In May and June, BelizeKids.org, in conjunction with fabulous restaurant and lounge Finn & Martini, worked to raise money for a fourth week (20 children at $150bzd per child) for kids from San Pedro. And to provide all of the kids during the entire month with some extra comforts.
You may have also stopped by our table at Ambergris Caye’s LobsterFest. Thank you! We received over $400bzd in generous donations.
Gil, Jeff and Rebecca from BelizeKids headed up to the camp on Thursday to drop off 20 sets of new sheets, 8 fans for the kids’ cabins and a few sweets from Casa Pan Dulce bakery for the kids.
It was an absolutely gorgeous day.
And the view when we landed on the dock. What a gorgeous stretch of beach to camp.
A few of the cabins.
Taking a photo with all the kids was tough for sure…but everyone was having a great time and they were super happy to receive fans.
The attempt at a group shoot.
The beach volleyball for the kids.
We will be visiting again during the coming weeks – and spending the night and will report back with that experience and the final tally on our donations to the camp.
Thank you so much to all who helped.
